IE breaks on event.preventDefault in methods that are not event handlers

Apparently, in IE, the event object can't be accessed in functions that aren't event handlers.

Simple example:

So preventDefault will throw a "Member not found" error when you use it in any method that isn't a handler.

I think you can get around this by storing a reference to the event after passing it through document.createEventObject

though I'm not 100% sure about that.
